SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City police say a pedestrian was killed after he was struck by an SUV while crossing a street.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/20dHkP0) that the incident happened Friday around 6:15 p.m. on 500 East near 830 South.

According to police Lt. John Beener, the man was thrown into the air by the impact and landed several feet away.

The man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition due to head trauma.

He was pronounced dead two hours later.

Beener says an initial investigation indicates the SUV driver is not at fault.

He says the man was crossing midblock and another vehicle had to “brake aggressively” to keep from hitting him just moments before he was hit.

Rain at the time may have also contributed to the collision.
