MONROE, Mich. (AP) - A Monroe woman and her two children were able to safely escape their apartment after an adjoining unit was set on fire and burned.

Monroe police say a 25-year-old person has been arrested in connection with the arson.

Fire officials were called to the duplex about 5 p.m. Friday and extinguished the blaze. A puppy in the burning apartment was killed.

The suspect was seen leaving the apartment before the fire was observed. That person was jailed and faces home invasion and other charges.

Monroe is in southeastern Michigan.
