PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police are investigating after a high school student was stabbed in the back in Providence.

Police say the stabbing occurred Friday evening in the area of Fricker Street near Central High School and the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

The teenager was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police have not released the teen’s identity.

Police say several high school students fled the scene when authorities arrived.

WJAR-TV reports that a suspect fled the scene in a blue Honda.

Police believe there was a fight involving several students. There’s no word on which high schools the students attend.

Police say shots were fired about a block away on Cranston Street around the time of the stabbing.

No arrests have been made.
