ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A Piedmont man has died after the tow truck he was driving crashed.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore tells local media that 67-year-old William Armstrong Jr. was out Friday when his vehicle broke down and his friend loaned him a tow truck. The wreck happened around 1:30 a.m.

Shore says while he Armstrong was driving on Interstate 85, he was talking to his friend and said he was having medical problems before the call disconnected.

Sheriff’s deputies from Greenville and Anderson counties were able to use cellphone towers to ping Armstrong’s cellphone and find out where he was.

Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol says the truck had veered off the interstate just past Exit 40, went down an embankment, through a parking lot and hit a tree.
