PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - An east Alabama woman is dead after being fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy who was trying to arrest her.

The Lee County coroner’s office said in a statement Saturday that 41-year-old Angela Hiatt was shot to death Friday in Phenix City by a Lee County sheriff’s deputy.

The coroner’s office says a deputy was attempting to arrest the woman on outstanding warrants when she drove her vehicle at him. The officer fired his gun at the vehicle, which then hit the officer’s patrol car and a house.

The statement says the woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

WTVM-TV (https://bit.ly/1m5Bdt8 ) reports that the shooting happened after a short chase, and that an 18-year-old male who was in a pickup truck with Hiatt wasn’t injured.

State police will investigate.
