NEW YORK (AP) - Police say an intoxicated driver who was involved in an auto accident in Brooklyn has died in police custody.

The 28-year-old man had been arrested on drunken driving charges following an accident on Avenue J just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. No injuries were reported in that accident.

Police say the driver was sent to an Intoxicated Driver Testing Unit at the 78th Precinct and then transported to the 69th Precinct in Canarsie for processing. He was later found unconscious and unresponsive inside a cell area at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner is to determine the exact cause of death.
