JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man was stabbed and seriously injured when he tried to stop a car burglary.

Jersey City police say the confrontation occurred early Sunday.

They say the 23-year-old victim was part of a group that was trying to help a woman with her car. The suspect then drove up and offered his assistance, but the offer was turned down.

When the suspect allegedly tried to break a window and enter the woman’s car, the victim tried to punch him. But the suspect grabbed a sharp tool and stabbed the victim in the stomach.

The victim’s friends took him to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities say the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle and remains at large.
