NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey authorities say a suspect involved in a motor vehicle stop in Newark was shot by police after he fired at them.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray says Sunday her office is investigating.

She says preliminary findings indicate the suspect got out of the vehicle after he was stopped about 9:30 p.m. Saturday and he fired at an officer who then returned fire.

The suspect was taken to University Hospital where he was in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Neither the suspect nor the officer was identified.
