PANAMA CITY (AP) - Ryan Armour won the Web.com Tour’s season-opening Panama Claro Championship on Sunday for his first victory in 217 career starts.

The 39-year-old former Ohio State player closed with a 6-under 64 in hot and windy conditions for a three-stroke victory over Kyle Thompson. Armour finished at 12-under 268 at Panama Golf Club and earned $112,500.

“I was getting a little choked up coming down the stretch thinking about how many times I was in contention and didn’t close the deal,” Armour said. “Luckily, today I got so far ahead that the three- putt on the 18th hole didn’t matter. It’s an unbelievable relief, unbelievable ecstasy to get this ‘W’ and get this season going right.”

Armour eagled the par-5 fourth, hitting a 3-iron from 219 yards to 6 feet.

“I’ve always been a grinder and this cements that I can get it done over four rounds,” Armour said. “It was very satisfying to get it done.”

Thompson had a 66.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled,” Thompson said. “I’m satisfied and I just got beat today. Ryan played incredible golf and I couldn’t be happier for him. This is his first tour win and he’s one of my best friends.”

Third-round leader Curtis Thompson shot a 72 to drop into a tie with Martin Flores at 8 under.

Jonathan Byrd (65) and Austin Cook (67) followed at 7 under.

The tour will be in Bogota next week for the Club Colombia Championship. The U.S. schedule will open March 17-20 with the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.

This story has been corrected to change Armour’s age to 39.
