MARSEILLE, France (AP) - Newcastle winger Florian Thauvin has returned to Marseille on loan until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old Frenchman joined the English Premier League club last August on a five-year contact but failed to establish himself as a regular starter, scoring just one goal in 16 matches.

Newcastle said there is no option to make Thauvin’s loan deal permanent.

Thauvin spent two seasons with Marseille, where he scored 21 goals in 92 games.

After taking part to his first training session with his teammates, Thauvin said he is ready to start immediately and could be included in the squad that will take on Montpellier on Tuesday.

Marseille is 10th in the French league, eight points behind second-place Monaco.

“We have had mixed fortunes so far, we don’t really know what to expect,” Thauvin said. “But there are excellent players in the team and the atmosphere is great.”
