ABILENE, Texas (AP) - Abilene police say a man has been charged with assault after allegedly shooting at two officers who then returned fire and wounded him.

No officers were hurt in the gunfire early Monday. Police say Derek Lee Casey was treated and released at an Abilene hospital, then charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Online Taylor County jail records don’t list an attorney to speak for the 31-year-old Casey, who’s held on $500,000 bond.

Police before dawn Monday responded to a call about an armed man trying to get into a house to reach his girlfriend. Officers located Casey near the back door. Authorities say Casey ignored police commands and shot at two officers, but missed. Officers then shot him.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave.
