MIDDLETOWN, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a 36-year-old father is dead after he was hit by car while crossing a street in central New Jersey.

John Chambers was crossing state Route 36 in Middletown Township just after 6 p.m. Saturday night when he was hit by a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene of the crash. The name of the driver is being withheld.

Authorities are investigating.

Harmony Elementary School Principal Erik Paulson posted a letter on Sunday saying Chambers was a custodian at the school.

Chambers was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #53. The group created a fundraiser though a crowdfunding website that has raised thousands for his family.
