DETROIT (AP) - A judge has applied to trademark the name “Detroit RiverWalk” in hopes of profiting from the sales of merchandise promoting the popular city attraction.

The Detroit News reports (https://detne.ws/1JSesPe ) Wayne County Probate Judge Terrance Keith filed trademark applications last month with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the names “the Detroit RiverWalk” and “RiverWalk Detroit.”

The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy manages the RiverWalk and, according to the federal trademark database, has trademarked the name “Detroit International Riverfront.” The conservancy raises funds for construction, operation and security of public spaces along the Detroit River.

Word of the trademark applications earlier was reported by Crain’s Detroit Business.

Keith is the author of a 2014 collection of his photographs titled “Sunrise on the Detroit River: A Love Letter to Detroit.”

This story has been corrected to show in one reference that trademark applications were filed, not a lawsuit.
