MINOT, N.D. (AP) - An animal shelter in Minot will begin same-day adoptions this week.

About 700 pets are adopted through the Souris Valley Animal Shelter each year. Director Randy McDonald says he believes the shelter can increase that number to 1,000 by eliminating questionnaires and other paperwork for potential pet owners.

McDonald tells KXMC-TV (https://bit.ly/1Jmc2NR) that same-day adoptions should provide a good experience at the animal shelter and help eliminate over-breeding.

Animal shelter officials say many people who cannot adopt a pet on the same day go to a pet store to buy one.
