ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) - Amway co-founder Rich DeVos and his family donated $36 million to Grand Valley State University in the past three decades.

The Grand Rapids Press reports (https://bit.ly/1PaUMIa ) the Michigan billionaire’s support of the Grand Rapids-area public university represents the largest donation to Grand Valley State from a single private source.

Last year, Forbes reported that the DeVos family had nearly $1.2 billion in lifetime giving.

Family spokesman John Truscott says the DeVos family is opening up about its philanthropy to encourage generosity in others.

DeVos, who jokingly refers to himself as a loyal GVSU “un-alum,” has encouraged others to support the school. The university’s President Tom Haas says: “That’s why we are the regional powerhouse we are today from that small little college in the cornfield.”
