RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond Public Schools is proposing an $8.4 million pay plan to better keep and attract teachers.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1PFEJF3), if approved, the plan will create an updated salary structure to balance out changes that have created a lack of competition and pay inequality within the school system over the past several years.

The plan is part of Superintendent Dana T. Bedden’s proposed $298 million budget. It calls for using steps, based upon years of experience, to create a more equitable range of salaries.

School administrators also are working to create a unified pay scale for the support and administrative staff.

Bedden says if the school system expects to keep experienced teachers and attract new ones, it’s important to have a pay system in place that rewards educators.
