SUSSEX, Va. (AP) - State regulators have issued notices of violation to the Sussex County Landfill following complaints about odor.

Media outlets report that Virginia Department of Environmental Quality officials observed the violations during a Dec. 3 inspection. The agency issued the notices on Dec. 21.

The violations included leachate flowing outside the lined disposal area into forested wetlands, and several sinkholes on top of the landfill.

The landfill is operated by Atlantic Waste Disposal Inc., a subsidiary of Waste Management Inc.

Waste Management spokeswoman Lisa Kardell says the company is working to eliminate off-site odors at the landfill. She says the company apologizes for any inconvenience that the odors have caused.
