NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a family friend’s 1-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 42 years in prison.

Thirty-seven-year-old Arthur Hapgood of Waterbury was sentenced Wednesday in New Britain Superior Court.

Hapgood pleaded guilty in September in the August 2014 killing of 14-month-old Zaniyah Calloway at his mother’s apartment in Bristol.

Authorities say Hapgood became angry during an argument with his wife and stabbed the girl while high on drugs.

Hapgood was on probation at the time after serving a four-year prison sentence for selling drugs.

A report released in September by the state child advocate’s office and the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence says Hapgood tested positive for PCP shortly before the killing.

WFSB-TV reports Hapgood will be eligible for parole after 25 years.
