JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The police department in the southeast Alaska community of Haines says one of its officers accidentally shot himself in the arm.

The Haines Police Department, in a release, says 52-year-old Brayton Long accidentally shot himself in the lower arm while conducting firearms training. The incident happened Tuesday.

The Juneau Empire reports (bit.ly/1Jv9NrO) that Long was hired late last year. He previously served as an officer with the Skagway Police Department.

Long was taken to a local clinic and later to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Alaska State Troopers and the Haines Police Department are investigating what led to the shooting.
