ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The new St. Croix River bridge connecting Minnesota and Wisconsin won’t open until the fall of 2017.

The Minnesota and Wisconsin transportation departments announced the new opening date Wednesday. The agencies say the opening has been delayed because of equipment problems, material shortages and weather.

The Star Tribune (https://strib.mn/1n5gxTi ) reports it’s the first official acknowledgement of a new project schedule since the agencies reported in September that the original 2016 completion date could not be met.

The bridge project is budgeted for as much as $676 million. MnDOT spokesman Kevin Gutknecht says the delay’s possible effect on costs won’t be known until the agencies complete negotiations with the general contractor.

MnDOT project director Michael Beer says officials believe the new date “is well within the project team’s capacity to meet.”
