PIERSON, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a 16-year-old soccer player from central Florida’s A.T. Dewitt Taylor High School collapsed and died during a game.

Principal Ron Pagano told parents in a recorded message sent out Thursday that Rosio Delao died of asthma complications during Wednesday’s junior varsity game. The high school is in Pierson, near DeLand.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/1IT1BBt ) reports paramedics attended to the girl at the school, then took her to a hospital in DeLand, where she was pronounced dead Wednesday night.

Coach Antuarn Williams told officials Delao raised her hand indicating she needed to come off the field. She used an inhaler before falling to the ground.

Pagano says grief counselors were available at the school on Thursday.

The boys soccer game was rescheduled for Friday night.
