BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A Beaufort County man charged with murder in the fatal shooting of his stepfather last year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (bit.ly/1mIsq) that 22-year-old Bryan Malonis of Bluffton will be taken to a state mental health facility after a judge ruled in the case on Wednesday.

Malonis had been charged in the shooting death last May of his 40-year-old stepfather, Joseph Cochran. Authorities say the victim was shot twice in the chest and once in the back of the head.

The newspaper reported Malonis’ mother had said that her son had been prescribed medications for schizophrenia but didn’t take them regularly.
