DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - A Danville man convicted of felony murder and child abuse in the death of a toddler in his care has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Twenty-nine-year-old Michael James Gill Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in Danville Circuit Court.

The Danville Register & Bee (bit.ly/1JZhMIm) reports that Gill apologized to the victim’s mother but denied killing 20-month-old Aleigha Grace Sadler.

A Danville firefighter testified he found the girl unresponsive at Gill’s home after responding to a call on Nov. 20, 2014.

The toddler was taken to a hospital, where she died three days later.

The Danville Police Department has said an autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
