DAYTON, Nev. (AP) - Students who were asked to view a controversial photo as part of an assignment are speaking out against the suspension of the assigning teacher.

KRNV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1UzL1qQ ) that Elizabeth Clausen is on temporary leave after she had her students look at an illustration depicting a white police officer in a white hood evocative of the Ku Klux Klan pointing a gun at a black child wearing a hoodie holding candy as part of their final exam.

The assignment was to draw parallels between the picture and America’s past with slavery.

Lyon County School District officials say they are investigating the motives behind the picture. They have issued a statement apologizing for the offensive nature of the picture.

Students in Clausen’s class say they support their teacher for opening a dialogue.
