PLYMOUTH, N.C. (AP) - Police are searching for a female inmate who escaped while at a hospital in Washington County.

Multiple media outlets reported that 29-year-old Heather Burton escaped from the Washington Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff John Barnes said Burton fell in a stairwell at the Washington County Courthouse in Plymouth while on her way to a court appearance to face a charge of probation violation.

She was taken to the hospital for examination of her knee and ankle. She slipped through a bathroom with two doors as health workers were about to X-ray her injuries.

Police said she stole a pickup truck from a nearby garage.
