PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Hughes County commissioners in Pierre aren’t following the lead of their counterparts in other parts of the state when it comes to pay raises.

The Capital Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1mECKrb ) that commissioners this week approved a 3 percent pay raise for Hughes County employees but excluded themselves. Their salaries will remain the same as last year.

By comparison, in Rapid City, Pennington County commissioners voted this week to give themselves a 20 percent pay increase. In Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County commissioners voted themselves a 1.5 percent raise.

The Hughes County Commission has been wrangling with its budget for months trying to avoid red ink, citing growing court system costs and health care obligations.
