CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Kanawha County will host the region’s first major spelling bee of 2016.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports (bit.ly/1OOq0e1) county spellers will compete Saturday. Sixty-one are signed up this year.

Spellers have already advanced through classroom and school spelling bees. The county bee will be followed by the newspaper’s regional spelling bee in March and nationals in May.

The competition is sponsored by the Kanawha County Schools Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the county board of education.

The county bee will follow standard spelling bee format.

While the top three spellers all receive trophies, the winner will be named grand champion and also advance to the regional bee on March 12. Kanawha County also sends the second place speller to the regional bee as a runner-up.
