AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Large donors to the Maine Democratic Party via the Hillary Victory Fund include a Cuban-born sugar tycoon, a Chicago billionaire and a California-based registered foreign agent for the government of Sri Lanka.

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting reports that 14 out-of-state wealthy donors contributed more than $90,000 to the Maine Democratic Party since mid-September. But the center says much of those contributions were quickly transferred to the Democratic National Committee.

The Maine Democratic Party is allowed to collect up to $10,000 from each donor through the Hillary Victory Fund, a joint fundraising effort by the candidate, the DNC and state parties.

Critics say the unlimited transfers between state and national committees represent the kind of soft money that led to limits in 2002.
