FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - A New Bedford man who authorities say killed a 9-month-old girl in 2013 has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III says 24-year-old Ethen Harrison pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday in Superior Court in Fall River. Harrison would be eligible for parole after 15 years.

Prosecutors say Harrison admitted to hitting and shaking Ariel Eluziario because she would not stop crying. Authorities say Harrison was baby-sitting the girl, who was his girlfriend’s daughter. The baby became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Harrison’s lawyer, Robert Jubinville, called the case a tragedy. He said Harrison has mental health problems and pleaded to a lesser charge to avoid a potential sentence of life in prison without parole.
