WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A Winston-Salem police officer has been released from the hospital, two days after he was shot multiple times during a struggle with a motorist.

Multiple media outlets report that 27-year-old Officer Nicholas Wayne Powell was released from a Winston-Salem hospital on Wednesday.

Authorities say Powell was shot early Monday after he and another officer tried to investigate the smell of marijuana from a car stopped for speeding.

Police Chief Barry Rountree says 26-year-old Gary Lynn dragged Powell about a quarter-mile as they struggled inside the car and then shot him.

Police say a gunshot to Powell’s chest was stopped by his protective vest.

Lynn has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, fleeing and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
