WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Warwick police say a pit bull involved in an attack that killed a smaller dog last weekend will not be euthuanized because it has no previous offenses.

Police say a 4-year-old papillon named Stewie that was walking with its owner was killed by the pit bull Sunday afternoon in the Meadow Brook neighborhood. The pit bull and a husky belonging to the same owner were roaming loose at the time.

The pit bull is being held at the local animal shelter pending a vicious dog hearing. Police say the husky didn’t take part in the attack and was released to its owner.

Police haven’t said whether they will cite the owner of the pit bull and husky for violating the city’s leash law.
