GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) - Schalke says it will sign Austria under-21 midfielder Alessandro Schoepf from German second-division side Nuremberg.

The Bundesliga team says the 21-year-old Schoepf will sign a contract through June 2019 upon completion of a medical examination Friday at the team’s winter training camp in Orlando, Florida.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt says “Alessandro is a versatile midfielder with huge potential whose development is nowhere near completed at his 21 years.”

Schoepf began his career in Austria with SV Laengenfeld (1999-2007) and BNZ Tirol (2007-09) before joining Bayern Munich’s youth setup in 2009. He played 63 league games for Bayern’s under-23 side before joining Nuremberg ahead of the 2014-15 season. He played 51 second-division games for Nuremberg.

Schoepf has played 19 games for Austria’s under-21 side.
