SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Court authorities are continuing to examine the background of Utah teenager charged with luring a 12-year-old neighbor from her home and killing her.

The 16-year-old West Valley City boy appeared in court Thursday. He is facing charges of aggravated murder and rape of a child in the July 2015 death of Kailey Vijil (VIJ’-el).

Prosecutors want to try him as an adult, but defense attorneys have raised questions about whether he’s mentally competent to stand trial. He’s due back in court April 12.

Authorities say the teen knocked on her door pretending to need help looking for a lost cat, and also tried to lure at least one other girl that night.

The Associated Press is not naming the defendant because he is a juvenile.

This story has been corrected to show the teen is 16, not 15.
