CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - State Secretary of Veterans Assistance Rick Thompson says he’s stepping down after more than two years to run for sheriff in Wayne County.

The State Journal (bit.ly/1mJ5jmQ) reports Thompson announced Thursday that he’s resigning on Friday. He says he wants another chance to give back to the community.

The Wayne County Democrat served as House speaker for more than six years.

An attorney, Thompson was first elected to the House of Delegates for one term in 1980. He was elected again in 2000 and served until 2013, when he joined Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s Cabinet following the retirement of Keith Gwinn.
