CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - The Horry County Coroner’s Office says an infant who died after being carried into a creek near Socastee last year died of drowning.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler told local media outlets Thursday that the final results from an autopsy performed earlier have been released. The autopsy determined that drowning was the cause of death of 5-month-old Grace Carlson Santa Cruz.

Her body was recovered from a creek in early November.

The child’s mother, 33-year-old Sarah Lane Toney, has been charged with homicide by child abuse. Toney told authorities she was carrying her daughter across a rain-swollen creek when the child was washed away.
