DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Duke has promoted Zac Roper to offensive coordinator.

Coach David Cutcliffe announced the promotion Friday, saying Roper also will be the associate head coach. Roper has been on the Blue Devils’ staff since Cutcliffe took over in 2008 and has been the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach for the past three seasons.

He replaces Scottie Montgomery, who had the job for two years but was hired last month as East Carolina’s head coach.

Roper is the younger brother of Kurt Roper, who was Duke’s offensive coordinator from 2008-13 and now is in charge of South Carolina’s offense.

Duke returns six offensive starters from a team that averaged 439 yards and 31.5 points and capped an 8-5 season by winning the Pinstripe Bowl.
