FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A Fort Worth-area father has been found guilty of using a box cutter to carve a pentagram into his 6-year-old son’s back in 2012.

Forty-two-year-old Brent Bartel, of Richland Hills, was convicted Thursday of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a family member and injury to a child.

Lindy Bartel testified Tuesday in the Tarrant County court that she awoke to her son’s screams and saw her husband using a box cutter on the boy. The boy, who’s now 9, was treated for his wounds.

Sentencing began moments after the jury’s verdict was read. Brent Bartel faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

His attorney Joetta Keene says he needs to be in a hospital where he can recover from his mental illnesses.

Sentencing is set to continue Friday.
