LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A Lafayette student has been arrested after officials say he brought a loaded handgun onto the campus of the W.D. Smith Career Center.

Local media outlets report 19-year-old Nathan Bob was arrested Thursday and charged with possession of a firearm in a school zone.

Sgt. Kyle Soriez says Lafayette Police school resource officers arrived to the campus and found Bob had a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol inside of a classroom.

Lafayette Parish School System Director of Middle and High Schools Brian Hebert says the situation was taken care of quickly and the school wasn’t shut down.

Officials say letters explaining the situation to parents were sent home with students.

Bob was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. It isn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney.
