MCCOMB, Ohio (AP) - A sheriff’s office says a hunter found fatally shot in a field in northwestern Ohio apparently died from an accidental gunshot wound.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the man died Thursday in a field east of the village of McComb. Authorities received a report of a man lying in the field in Portage Township shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday.

Sheriff’s officials say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was being withheld until family members could be notified.

Deputies say the man appeared to have been carrying a shotgun, when it discharged and wounded him.

The death remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and Hancock County Coroner’s Office.
