FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo missed Friday’s legislative session because he was attending a meeting at his law firm in Florida, Speaker Pro Tem Jody Richards said.

Stumbo’s absence comes one day after House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover predicted Monday would be “an historic day” in Kentucky. He has declined to elaborate.

Democrats have a 50-46 advantage in the House, with four vacant seats. Special elections are scheduled March 8 to fill those seats.

It is rare for a House Speaker to miss a day when the legislature is in session. But Richards, who preceded Stumbo as speaker, said he is not aware of any changes in leadership. He said Hoover’s comments were designed to foster anxiety among Democrats, but added he is not concerned.

House Republicans have not been in power since 1920.
