ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities in Anderson County say the body of a newborn baby was found in a field off a local highway.
Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman told local media outlets that a man walking through the woods around 11 a.m. Saturday saw the baby and called 911. Investigators say the baby girl was found under a pine tree in a field.
Boseman said the placenta and umbilical cord were still attached, indicating the baby was full-term. He said the baby may have been born elsewhere and then brought to the field on Cherokee Circle near State 24.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine if the baby was born alive.
Area hospitals have been asked to alert authorities if a woman comes in with signs of infection due to childbirth
