PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man convicted of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend 11 times and leaving the blade of the kitchen knife in her neck has been sentenced to life in prison.
Raheem Jones must serve more than 63 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday. A Passaic County jury found the 37-year-old Paterson man guilty last October on murder and weapons offenses in the December 2012 death of 39-year-old Latasha Smith.
Prosecutors say Jones killed Smith after she told him their relationship was over. They sought a lengthy sentence for Jones, citing his criminal record and lengthy history of violence.
Jones was released from a halfway house the day before the killing after serving time in prison for breaking Smith’s nose with a punch.
