FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a driver attempting to miss a road crew along a Central California highway died in an accident that seriously injured one of the workers.

California Highway Patrol Officer Justin Montooth said Friday that the California Department of Transportation worker came between the pickup and a CalTrans truck, breaking both of his legs.

Montooth says the crew on Friday morning was surveying State Route 198 near Exeter, a community between Fresno and Bakersfield. Montooth says he couldn’t confirm any fatalities.

The Visalia Times-Delta newspaper reports (https://vtd-tar.co/29mNMNx ) that the pickup swerved to miss the crew and flipped several time.

Witnesses tell the newspaper that the pickup driver was pinned inside and died at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating.
