SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah state Sen. Al Jackson has resigned ahead of his move out of state.

Jackson, a Republican from Highland, submitted a formal resignation letter Friday to the Senate president. Jackson announced last fall that he would be moving to Virginia to be closer to family and his teenage son, who will be playing basketball for Duke University next season.

In April, Jackson made news after posting and deleting a racially charged tweet about the players in the men’s basketball NCAA championship.

Jackson, who is black, said it was nice to see teams without “tattoos and nappy heads.”

He told The Salt Lake Tribune that he didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Local GOP officials will pick his replacement until a new senator is chosen in the November election.
