ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police say an officer has been fired after an internal review found that he used excessive force when he fatally shot a man.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (https://bit.ly/29tN8LE ) that Officer James R. Burns’ termination will take effect Tuesday.

Police have said Burns shot and killed 22-year-old Deravis Caine Rogers on June 22. Police say Rogers was suspected of breaking into vehicles at a northeast Atlanta apartment complex and was fleeing in a silver sedan when he was shot once in the head.

Atlanta police Sgt. Warren Pickard told the newspaper the use of force was ruled excessive because there was no obvious threat to Burns. The officer is white and Rogers was black.

Burns joined the department as a cadet in September 2013.
