NEDERLAND, Colo. (AP) - Two first responders fighting a wildfire in Boulder County have continued working to save their neighbors’ homes even after their own was destroyed by the blaze.
The Daily Camera reports (https://tinyurl.com/jeyhm9y ) that Charlie and Bretlyn Schmidtmann’s home was destroyed by the fire north of Nederland over the weekend.
Charlie Schmidtmann is a captain with the Nederland Fire Protection District and Bretlyn Schmidtmann is an ER nurse, a paramedic and volunteer firefighter.
Charlie Schmidtmann was one of the first to respond when the fire broke out Saturday. He had time to rescue a horse and a miniature donkey from his property, but the house was already in flames when he arrived. The couple’s two dogs ran away from the fire.
A fundraiser to help the couple has raised more than $56,000 as of Monday.
