NORTH GREENBUSH, N.Y. (AP) - A 28-year-old man has been charged in the slaying of an upstate New York city official outside the victim’s home last December.

Rensselaer County District Attorney Joel Abelove says Joseph Vandenburgh was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of 56-year-old William Chamberlain.

The charge comes nearly seven months after Chamberlain’s wife found him collapsed on a lawn near the couple’s home in the town of North Greenbush. Chamberlain worked for nearly 30 years for the neighboring city of Troy, where he was director of operations when he was slain.

Abelove says Vandenburgh was serving time in a state prison for a parole violation when he was charged. He’s being held without bail.

Officials haven’t revealed a motive for the slaying.

The county public defender assigned to Vandenburgh’s case wasn’t available for comment.
