ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Nearly two dozen vehicles have been involved in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 395 in Arlington County.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller says the accident was caused Tuesday night when a driver had a medical emergency and lost control of his vehicle, which then began bumping into other vehicles on the interstate’s northbound lanes.

The crash, which involved 21 vehicles, stretched for five miles and had traffic backed up for almost three hours.

Geller says the driver who caused the accident was taken to the hospital. Three other people were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

She says many of the vehicles involved had minor damage from the crash and eight were towed from the scene.
