JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - A professional kitesurfer is expected to recover after falling 150 feet from his motorized paraglider in Florida.

The Palm Beach Post quotes a friend of 34-year-old Damien LeRoy (https://pbpo.st/29C16xY ) as saying that LeRoy had been flying over the sands near the Juno Beach Pier on Monday evening when his steering equipment failed.

Jon Modica said LeRoy broke a leg, punctured a lung and fractured his tailbone and parts of his spine in the fall. Modica says LeRoy was “cracking jokes and in very high spirits.”

Jupiter Police spokeswoman Kristin Rightler told the newspaper (https://pbpo.st/29PvWps ) that LeRoy was airlifted to a hospital from the scene where he landed in a mangrove thicket.

In 2011, LeRoy won the 2011 Kite Slalom World Championships in Mucia, Spain.
