CASCADE, Md. (AP) - Washington County is taking ownership of a largely deserted former Army base in Cascade that officials hope will be turned into a vibrant mixed-use center.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday voted 4-0 to have the county become the property owner and sole developers of the Cascade Town Centre at Fort Ritchie.

County Administrator Gregory B. Murray tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown (https://bit.ly/29PZhx0 ) that the proposed mixed-use development would have academic, commercial, residential and recreational uses.

Murray estimates that the project could bring back about 3,000 people to the area - similar to the population before the base closed in 1998 - as well as around 1,000 jobs.

The county will officially take over the property on September 15. It hopes to prepare for new construction next year.
